Convections of Music Videos

Convections and forms are the codes which identify what type of midi text or genre it is. As an audience we expect this from a particular type of text and also different types of genre.

These music videos clearly portray the genre of music "Drill" through the outfit and the titles.

They have to sell and most importantly sell to the right audience. Convections, like traditions, make it easy for an audience to relate or understand the type of media which they are consuming and allows them to situate a song and artist within a music genre.

The purpose of the music video is to help sell the album, single, concert tickets and merchandise. It also helps to relate to other similar artist which can appeal to similar fans.

Technical and Symbolic Convections
Technical relate to the styles of camera, editing and sounds, these can be diegetic or non diegetic, part of performance obviously but also part of narrative in some cases too.

Close ups help to add recognition of the artist or the band, this builds star image and also emphasises the link with music and lyrics- the singers face, the drummers hands.

Mid shots show the body language and costume of artists, this can demonstrate emotions and can connote values and attitudes.

Tilts, pans and tracking shots allow the artist to move around, moving from one band member to another which shows their relationship as a band.

Long shots and wide shots show the set of the video and the particular location.

Crane shots are used to emphasise scale of live audience any concert and add to movement and pace.

Artificial lighting is very often used to give the artist a glow or make them seem perfect. It can also be used to add a sense of danger using dark lighting or bright light to give a sense of safety.

The editing must match the pace and rhythm of the music, the artist has to mimic the lyrics perfectly and edited perfectly to make the video seem like a live performance.
Discontinuity editing, jump cuts to create a high energy and sense of frantic movement.

Symbolic convections relate to mise-en-scene; costume, props, location, setting, colours, lighting, make up, arrangement of band members and performance.

The instruments themselves fit a certain category and can help distinctfy the certain band.

Colour is another symbolic convention.
The performance is so important in a music video as the singer is singing to you, it gives a sense of intimacy with the band or singer.

Types of Music Video
Performance- this is similar to a live performance, the footage shows the band or singer miming the words.
Concept- these are based around one particular idea and often will seem very unrealistic to the audience.
Narrative- this is almost a small story as a music video, this will often follow the singer miming part of the song.
Mixture- This is a video which combines all of the types listed above.

Favourite Music

My favourite genre of music would have to be Rap, Drill and Reggae. Rap and drill gets me very pumped and excited and I love how meaningful some rap is and very similar to poetry and the artist put how they feel onto the paper. I love Reggae when I'm in a different mood as its very relaxing and powerful.

My favourite artist would have to be "Santan Dave" who I have seen live at the 02 Brixton Academy recently. His songs are very deep and powerful which really like but also they are upbeat. Another artist which I really look up to is Loyle Carner, he's very true to himself and doesn't care about what other think which is reflected in his music and is very in touch with his feelings.
I found out about these two artist from my friends introducing me to their songs and I instantly loved them. I've got posters of both the artist and soon buying the vinyl for my record player. The music videos from Dave are very similar to each other with him constantly being on the cameras focus looking into the camera and miming the whole song, he usually uses the area which he lives in for the music videos setting. Loyle Carner's videos tell more of a story which I personally really like and some of the stories relate to the song but some have a much deeper meaning.
I would say that Loyle Carner has influenced me to be true to myself, never fake and to be your own person and to really appreciate those very close to you, especially your family.
Dave on the other hand has influenced me to not get involved with the wrong people as in his raps he tells the troubles he has gone through and getting out of certain situations.
Neither of the artist have websites but I follow both of them on most social media platforms to keep up with them and also to find out when future songs are releasing and any future concerts.

A2 year

I am excited to start a new project in the A2 year.  We will be planning, filming and editing a music video. We will have to choose a song which has a relatively low number of views on YouTube so our future video doesn't get taken down from copyright. I have had no experience within the music industry, but from the experience of filming my opening sequence I feel confident about filming the video in the future. I haven't done much research yet but I love the idea of a "drill" theme music video. This could be hard to do but I feel it would be lots of fun.

From my first year I have become very confident with using my blog and also making websites and videos which will be helpful for next year. I feel with my first year blog I should have done one blog post at a time and completely finish the post before moving onto the next blog, so I will remember that for next year and apply the experience.
