Different Areas of filmmaking

Different areas of Filmmaking

Production
Production is made up of five subcategories;

·     Development- this is the first stage, which the filmmakers will go through where they come up with the idea or story of the movie, any rights are bought if the movie is based of a Book or a novel. The funding for the movie has to be done by this stage.
·     Pre-Production- this is when the actors for the movie are finalised, they have found the technology for filming and found the locations needed for the movie.
·     Production- this is when the basic shots and the rough footage is shot.
·     Post production- this is when all of the sound, images and any special affects are edited and finalised.
·     Distribution- This is when the movie is released for cinemas and marketing has be done.

Distribution
This is the process, which is normally done by a film distributor, where the date and the location of the release of the movie is decided. They will also organise if the movie will go into cinemas first or go straight into the market available to buy. They will also decide on the marketing techniques needed for the particular movie.

Marketing
Marketing is the process where the particular movie is promoted before the movie is released and during the release. Press releases are normally the first process announcing the release of the future movie. The use of media advertising on social media and releasing a trailer of the movie.
Interviews with the cast of the movie and merchandise of the characters are also other ways of marketing.

Exhibition
This is how the movie is presented either through cinemas, which is often the first place to watch the movie, or through DVDs or watching the movie through phones or computers.

Producer
A producer is normally hired by a production company or will work for himself or herself and is hired.
The producer will overview the majority of the movie and will often help with the script and editing of the movie. As this is such a big role many producers will hire another producer to help them. A very important role is to hire the director. The producer is one of the key roles of making a movie as they overview everything and make many decisions on the movie.

An example of a successful producer is Steven Spielberg who produced some of the most successful movies to date.

Director

A film director’s role is to focus on the dramatical aspects of the cast such as facial expressions and certain characteristics the certain character should poses. The director will also have a very big influence on choosing the cast. The director has to be on set constantly viewing the cast shoot scenes so this is seen as a very hard working job and is very stressful. One of the most famous directors Quentin Tarantino, who directed movies such as Pulp fiction and Inglorious Bastards.

Editor

The editor role in a movie is to change the raw footage and placing it all together matching the sound and effects with the image. This is arguably one of the most important roles as if a movie is edited poorly it would ruin the movie. A very famous female editor Thelma Schoonmaker who edited movies such as Wolf Of Wall Street and Raging Ball.
