Kyle Cooper

Kyle Cooper
Kyle Cooper is a director and designs opening title sequences. He has produced over 350 visual affects. Kyle grew up in Massachusetts and from a young age was obsessed with drawing monsters and was very interested in superheroes. He was born 13th July 1962.

When he was a child he always had an interest in films and how they are edited. Kyle's first success was from the movie Seven which was given critical acclaim. Kyle founded a company with two others called Imaginary forces, this then over time became one of the most successful agencies in Hollywood at the time.

After a while he decided he was to caught up in the business side of things which is what drove him to make a much smaller company called Prologue, here he concentrates on title sequences.

He has directed and produced films such as "The Mummy" and "Spiderman".
Kyle has a very angry, horror style of opening sequence and his sequences introduce the film to you in the first scene, they give a glimpse of the movie. That being said Kyle is known for other styles and one of his most famous is in Spider man 2 which the opening sequence took nearly a year to
make, this shows the passion and effort that he puts into his work.

The sequence analysis

Catch Me if You Can
Catch Me if You Can came out on the 25th December 2002. The movie is about a young teenage boy who is played by Leonardo Dcaprio, a very intelligent, yet strange boy who is a con man. The movie follows the young boys different cons and the dilemmas he faces. The movie is a comedy and a crime movie which opens with a title sequence which clearly portrays the genre of the movie. The music which is in the opening sequence is very mysterious and very generic of old crime movies. The sequence shows a story using stick men of many different jobs and a constant detective following behind which gives us an idea before watching the movie of the plot of the movie.

The Man with the Golden Gun
The man with the golden gun came out on the 19th of December 1974. This bond movie is about James Bond catching an assassin who kills with a golden gun. It follows James' mission on attempting to kill the assassin having to locate the villains secret layer. The genre of the movie is action. The opening title sequence is very simple but yet affective and follows suit to all of the other James Bond movies, having the shadow of women walking around with very dark colours and revealing very little about the plot of the movie. The Golden gun which is throughout the title sequence makes the genre very clear of action and also makes it very clear the movie is going to be based around the gun however this is already very clear from the title. The music used has a very fast beat and adds suspense which also shows the genre of action.

The two movies I have chosen to review have some key similarities and differences. Firstly they both don't show any physical character or any features of any of the characters in the movie which adds mystery and makes us focus more on the story they are telling with the opening titles and also focusing on the credits more than you would with movies without an opening title.
They both have music in the background which links to the genre of the movie and starts to set the scene of the movies in a certain way.  However, the man with the golden gun opening sequence is much more simple and has much less going on in the sequence which makes us have more focus on the titles whereas Catch Me if You Can is revealing the plot of the story and brings are attention the story they are telling rather than the titles themselves. Personally I prefer The Man with the Golden Gun opening title sequence, as its very simple but yet effective.

The Art and Use of Titles

The Art and Use Of Titles

What are titles and why are they used?
-Titles give the institutional and creative names involved in funding, making and producing the film
-However, while they are incorporated as credits at the end of a film, the key information is often shown before the film.
-It's what's referred to as a title sequence.

What would you expect to see in an opening title sequence?
-There are actually 21 titles found in an opening credit sequence, appearing in a set order.
This may be the rule but often its unable to do.
These are the main 21; Money, production, directors name film, main star, film title, actor 1, actor 2, actor 3, actor 4, actor 5, casting, costume design, music, edited, production design, director of photography, executive producer, produced by, based upon, screen play, director.
(Going from 1-21)

More than just a name
What applies to the creative aspect of a title sequence?
-Font/style
-colours
-Framing/screen placement
-Pace of credits, transitions and edit

These choices link directly to:
-Genre
-style
as well as maybe even hints to the narrative

Seven by David Fincher
-What genre do you think the film is?
I think the movie was a horror or a thriller, it had a murder mystery feel and the music backed this up.

-what based on the credits do you think the narrative of the film will be?
Murder mystery

Movie Ideas

I researched news stories which I could possibly base my opening sequence on or use the story for inspiration for a similar story. Most of the stories which I found were based around serial killers or psychopath killers. I'm not sure if I'm going to use any of these stories for inspiration but I might use small aspects from these stories in my sequence.
